Program Description
Recent public health campaigns designed to eliminate mother-infant bedsharing have featured outrageous images designed to give the message that mother-infant bedsharing is always dangerous and increases the risk of infant death. In evaluating the effectiveness of these campaigns, we must ask two questions: 1) Does the science really say that mothers and infants must never share a bed? And 2) do public health campaign such as these actually keep infants safe? The surprising answer to both questions is “no.” Contrary, to inflammatory rhetoric, current studies on infant death still show that the majority of infant deaths labeled as SIDS or SUIDs do not take place adult beds. Moreover, in cases where infants do die in adult beds, there are often multiple modifiable risk factors, such as prone sleep, intoxicated or smoking parents, formula feeding, or fluffy bedding.
